Foreign Languages and Home School

One of the concerns of parents when considering home school is how their child or children will get some of the extra curricular courses that are offered in high school.

As pointed out in prior posts, when parents work together there can be strength in numbers, and various gifts in numbers.

You might have a parent who is musical, artistic, an auto mechanic, a plumber, a contractor, a seamstress, or a gardener.  People have all sorts of gifts and skills.

Parents can figure ways to offer their skills as extra curricular classes.

Beyond that, many courses are offered online. From time to time you see ads with opportunities to play the piano or guitar offered online.

One option that is taught online is that of foreign languages. There are many apps. Some are free. There are free YouTube classes in various languages. There are paid options.

In other words, where there is a will, there is a way.

Here is a German translation that may be an inspiration to a student that has an interest in languages and is wondering where it could be used.

An Example of In Depth Scientific Information

facts

In a world that has degenerated into posting what is trendy or politially correct or managed information, there is a lack of examples of actual scholars presenting scholarly information.

Here is a scientist presenting actual statistical information.

And while this is not a “home school” topic as such, it may be of interest to older students who are thinking of going into a scientific field. It will give them exposure to actual science, not just politically correct talking points.

A lot of times newscasters say “experts say”. Well, what are the facts? This scientist focuses on facts, not nebulous, unnamed, “experts say”.

Of course, this topic will also be of interest to all parents who are caught in the throes of dealing with this topic.

During this whole “plandemic” there are politicians and judges with no scientific background making medical decisions.

The media talks about “the experts say”, but present no facts.

This scientist presents facts, diagrams, statistics and data.

Add to Your Faith, Moral Excellence, Knowledge

Being born again into the kingdom of God is the beginning of a new life. There is more.

As mentioned in a previous post, it can be paralleled to a baby being born into a human family. It is a beginning. There is more. There is nuturing, caring, and training of the child. There is much more to come. That post is here.

Here is something the Apostle Peter wrote that indicates this.

II Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2 Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust. 5 Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; 6 and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control perseverance; and in perseverance godliness; 7 and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to not be idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brothers,[a] be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble. 11 For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The times we are living in are ones that cause us to stop, pause, think, study, and get more serious.

The world, at least parts of the developed western world such as the United States was headed in the direction of “let the good times roll”.

There was a focus on entertainment, movies, dining, pleasure, Facebook likes, selfies and a general non-serious trend in the country.  Would anyone dispute that greatly?  That element existed, wouldn’t you say?

The seriousness of the present time has caused people to start being more serious about studying and making choices.  It is not enough to live life in a sloppy or blithe (showing a casual and cheerful indifference) manner any more.

If you don’t know what is going on and don’t make the correct choice, there can be serious consequences.  If it hasn’t already happened to you, then it has probably happened to someone you know.

Hosea 4:6  My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you,
that you may be no priest to me.
Because you have forgotten your God’s law,
I will also forget your children.

But Peter above said we should not live in an ignorant manner.  We need to add to faith, moral excellence,  knowledge and the other virtues.

Moral excellence is important because part of the problem of the times is that some entities, whether people or organizations or school boards or employers or corporations or governments are lying.

True facts can be presented by top-notch scientists and physicians, some of the best in the world, and the facts are ignored.

Instead, as one person explained it very effectively, we are told, “experts say”.   We are not told “facts say”.   We are told “experts say”.

Since when, for example, did Facebook or your local county judge become an expert in medical matters which it took top notch doctors and scientists rigorous study of almost a decade or more to learn? When the school board put that much study into science? When did your mayor put that much scientific study into medicine or epidemiology? When did your governor put that much study into the scientific research? When did they become the “experts”?  How many years did they study?

We need to focus on facts, from people who have put in the time to gain the scientific knowledge, not “expert opinions” from “unnamed sources”.

Find facts from trained scientists who have not been paid off or threatened, of if they are threatened, are standing up against the threats.

It is so necessary to understand how much psychological warfare and lies are involved in today’s news. This is why President Trump called them the fake media, the lying media.

You have to realize that the pharmaceutical companies give a lot of advertising money to television stations. The television stations are unlikely to say things against those that feed them financially.

There is a saying, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”  The corporations, universities, schools, and various places that have a monied interest are unlikely to speak out against those that give them money.

A lot of research is funded by the government. Institutions that want to keep that funding are unlikely to say anything other than what the government wants.

It really is a choice between God and mammon.

Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and Mammon.

When Jesus walked the earth, and said the things He said, these truths are eternal. They are in existence now.

The problem for the modern mind is that they have been taught that this way of speaking was a folk culture way of talking, an old-fashioned way of talking, something peasants did long ago, and that it is not relevant to today.  The modern school teaches that this needs to be relegated to something from the Middle Ages.

But this is a wrong way to look at it because terms change, but truth does not.

Terms change. It happens all the time. What used to be called a “secretary” is now an “administrative assistant”. What use to be called a “car” is now called a “vehicle”. What used to be called “gasoline” is now called “fuel”. What used to be called a cup of coffee is now called a “latte” or something else. What used to be called “dad’s chair” is now called a “laz-y-boy”. What used to be called a “man” or a “woman” they are (wrongly) trying to change into any number of varied definitions. Terms change.

Even publications of the Bible have had to be updated to modern terms because not everyone can read English as it is existed in the 1600s when the King James Version was made.  We now say “you” for “thee” or “thou”.  And there are many other modernized terms.  Terms change, so we have to recognize that.

Here is John 3:16 in language even before the 1600’s; this is in language from the 1300’s.

Short video here.

Here is John 3:16 in King James English. It is more understandable.

Short video here.

Here is an even more modern translation.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

The point is, terms change.  Vocabulary changes and is simplified, at least to us.  I guess a person in the 1300’s would have trouble understanding our English.  In any case…

Jesus said you cannot serve God and mammon. Mammon is that money force in the world where money is the determining factor behind a decision. You decide that you will serve money more than God, more than God’s laws, more than the morality of God’s laws, more than loving service to humanity, that you will make your final decision based on whether the money is good for you or not. And that is what is happening now.

Mammon exists today, just clothed in different terms. It is advertising or not advertising, depending on decisions about money. It is forcing employees to get shots because someone is threatening your administrative or CEO or managerial job. It is forcing children to wear masks because funding will be cut at your school if you don’t. It is not allowing natural vitamins and natural known substances to strengthen the immune system in order to push an experimental shot that has horrendous side effects.  You have to realize that if there were any other type of way to deal with Covid, the experimental mRNA vaccine could not have been authorized by law.  This is why they fought President Trump so much when he tried to talk about other possibilities.

There are billions of dollars at stake in this, and some people don’t care about lives, they care about money, they care about mammon more than anything else.  Nine new billionaires have been made in all this.

Jesus said that you cannot serve God and mammon.

And so in today’s times, we need to pull out our Bibles, read them, and ask God to help us understand the terminology used in the Bible in relation to all the things happening around us.

The Bible’s wisdom is timeless. We just need God to help us understand how it applies to our lives today.

It is like gravity. Gravity existed 6000 years ago. It still exists today. It will exist tomorrow. Time does not change it.

The Word of God is timeless as well, even more so. Because gravity exists in a time-space field, but the Word of God is eternal. And we need to understand it for today.

Luke 16:8 … for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light.

You need to learn facts. Educate yourself. Shake off the tendency of this generation to sit around and wait for someone else to do it for them. That is the socialist mindset that has been creeping in…someone give it to me. Everyone must educate themselves and seek knowledge and moral excellence, as Peter says.

If you are concerned about learning about what is going on around you, there are a lot of facts here, at this site, about Covid, the shot, various reactions to it, and what scientists and physicians who are not afraid to speak out say. Link here.

As Saint Peter said, add to your faith, moral excellence, knowledge and more.

Red Alert: Children Must Learn True History In School to Avoid Bad Political Systems of the Past

If there is anything that society as a whole needs to get right, it is correct governmental and economic systems.

This is one of the reasons, why, at this site, I continually promote the Ron Paul Curriculum. I believe it is one of the finest curriculums in terms of history and economics, as well as teaching children to work independently.

We have seen government take over science, misuse it, and turn it into a medical dictatorship.

The reposted video listed below was created by the Babylon Bee, a site that focuses on Christian satire.

In the Bible, there is a lot of symbology.  People and events can have an actual historical meaning. They can also have more than one symbolic meaning.

Think about this.

A man can be a father, brother, son, uncle, nephew, cousin and grandson all at the same time. It is possible to have more than one term apply to one thing.

The Bible talks about the great red dragon. While there may be other meanings, it can refer to communism.

Revelation 12:3 Another sign was seen in heaven. Behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven crowns.

Communism is on the rise. It comes in first as socialism. A lot of younger people think socialism is okay.

There is a great move to eliminate history today.  This is dangerous because if we know the lessons of history, we can learn from them and don’t have to repeat them.

Don’t you try to learn from your own personal mistakes and not repeat them?

The same holds true for society.  We should learn from the past so we can have a better future by making better choices.

From history we know that socialism and communism have failed in the past.

This song was created, not because those who made it believe in communism, they don’t.

But it is made to warn people who have no clue what communism is about; this is the face of communism.

Watch the song.  And pass it on to those of your friends who think socialism and communism are good things.

Again, if you are looking for a good home school curriculum, consider the Ron Paul Curriculum. There is a more extensive article on this curriculum written from the point of graduation objectives, here with links to specific related topics.

Homeschool Graduation Options – Preparing for the Future

graduation

This post is written with both parents and highschoolers in mind. That is because these thoughts should be points of mutual discussion.

Primarily for Parents

No matter where you are with homeschooling, the end result is in mind. You want your child educated. You want your child to be qualified to go to college or some kind of vocational training. You want your child to be successful.

Let’s start with this. Not every child is destined for a white collar job. There are plenty of good trades such as auto mechanic, electrician, welder, dental hygienist, plumber, contractor and more that are not specifically sit-at-a-desk-8-hours-a-day jobs.

Don’t force your child into a career that is not the right one.

That said, realize there are many options for training, especially in today’s world. Community college is an excellent place to get a start on a career or the first two years of college at a substantially lower price.

If you are on this site often, you will know that I am a proponent of the Ron Paul Curriculum. The reason is, it is an excellent home school curriculum. It will teach your child to be independent.

If you click here you will see the 5 points that the Ron Paul Curriculum is known for. It is right at the top of the page.

The big question is:
Can a home-schooled child enter college?

The answer is “yes”.

However, the Ron Paul Curriculum adds quite a bit of light on that topic.  Here is some thought-provoking information about AP tests and CLEP tests.

The basic premise of the Ron Paul Curriculum is that if the student applies him or herself, they can CLEP out of college tests, thus saving money. They can take community college courses, thus saving money. They will be advanced along their college careers in relationship to their peers if they do this. And once you (or your home-schooled child) have a bunch of CLEP successfully completed, is the college going to reject you? Probably not, unless they wanted to squeeze every last dollar out of you by forcing you to take all their courses.  Check with the college you have in mind ahead of time.

I cannot say this enough. If you are seriously thinking about how to approach homeschooling, take an afternoon and really comb through the Ron Paul Curriculum site and really understand what they are saying and offering.

That said, there is one type of student this curriculum is NOT for, and that is the undisciplined student. You can read the article about that type of student here.

As a former home school mom, as well as a substitute teacher in public schools, I want to give a bit of my own personal input. I’ve also added some YouTube videos from other moms at the bottom of this page to help round out your thinking.

Let’s start with public school. I did a bit of substitute teaching. The main issue in the schools, at least at the ones I worked at, is discipline or the lack thereof. In today’s progressive world, students know they can create problems for teachers/adults and no one wants to resist these rebellious students because the students or their parents can create problems with lawsuits or social rejection or threat of job removal.  It happens, and you probably either have seen it yourself or heard a story about it.

Children are allowed cell phones in classes. “No child left behind” means the class works to the least industrious and least committed child. That’s my impression of how school works.

I saw excellent teachers brought down to the level of common core, which is a terrible curriculum. Teachers teach to the test…there is standardized testing and students must past that so the focus is on passing those test questions.

The standards are low. In my opinion, only a real “nerd” who instinctively loves learning and books can ignore all the chaos around himself or herself and succeed.

This is not to say there are not excellent teachers. There are. But they are forced into a politically correct environment that cramps their teaching style and forces them to drag along at the low level of public policy which is not in the best interest of the children. If you doubt that just look at the fact of how many schools were closed last year (2020) on a lie and how few public officials had the courage to open the schools.

One other thing needs to be said about the public schools, and that is how history is taught.  True history is not being taught. A progressive form of history is being taught. It is not healthy. It is not patriotic. It will not help the nation to grow children who are independent, self-reliant, hard workers, and patriotic.  It is not useful to train children to be “entitled” “snowflakes” who don’t want to work.

And then, of course, there is the whole problem of sexual education that you have nothing to say about (and that you may not even know about) and the possibility of things being done to your children behind your back and without your permission.

Enough on public school. Onto my opinion of homeschool.

I’ve seen a lot of homeschool curriculums. If I had it to do over, I would use the Ron Paul Curriculum. The reason is it makes the children learn and think indepently and it also focuses on writing. When I was in the public schools, it was unusual to see a coherent, well-written paragraph at the high school level. Children are not being educated.

Plus, I really like the idea of teaching children business courses and a finance course. Certainly, courses in the real world are lacking in public school, and even in some other home school curriculums.

Now the Ron Paul Curriculum does not cover everything.  It does not cover foreign languages.  It does not cover religious training.  And there are other options it does not cover.  But it covers the basics well and it tells you that you can add to the curriculum from other sources.  There are many good language courses today, so you can add that to the curriculum in your own way.

The big thing about the Ron Paul Curriculum is that the student must be self-disciplined. Now if you have a child who is already self-disciplined, say, in taking music lessons, or art, or sports, or helps out on the farm or any other type of activity which requires the child to stick with it and produce, you will know. You will know if your child is self-disciplined or not.

I know children. I know if I hand them a laptop and homework to do if they will stay on course or try to sneak over to play some video game when they should be working.  I know children.  You know children.  We all know children and pretty much what can be expected of each one.

I’ve never been a proponent of either television or video games, and my opinion and observation is that if children are brought up on TVs, movies, and video games, and that’s all they know, and they think that screen time means playing another game or watching another online movie, they probably will not do well with the Ron Paul Curriculum.

The father who sent in his opinion on that said as much. It wasn’t the curriculum that was the problem, it was the lack of discipline.

Now there are other home school curriculums. Basically, if your child cannot discipline himself, that means you will have to be the disciplinarian. Sorry to be so blunt, but if a child has not learned to do what he or she is supposed to do whether a parent is in the room or not, then you will have to be the disciplinarian in the room. In that case, as to which curriculum to pick, there are many. Do your research to find out the one that suits you.

I personally prefer teaching reading by sight and not phonics. I am for solid math, not artsy math. In other words, I prefer sticking to basic memorization and focusing on the facts. I know everything today is supposed to be “fun” but I find getting directly to business more satisfying, things are learned quicker, and a lot of nonsense is ignored.

But, you pick the curriculum you like. In my opinion, as said above, I think the Ron Paul Curriculum is the best which is why I focus on that.

As for whether home school children can succeed. The answer is yes. If you have a serious home school, regardless of the curriculum, and you keep things disciplined, your children normally, if all the experience I have  had with home school is typical of your home, your children should accomplish more in less time. That seems to be typical.

Again, a lot of time is spent in public schools trying to get the classroom in order. My apologies to any teacher who runs a well-run school room, but I am just saying  what I say because of what I’ve seen after a number of years. I know there are good teachers, again, but they definitely are handicapped by a system that is controlled by political and policy correctness.

With that said, parents need to go to school boards and help improve their schools. They need to know what is going on.

I’ve rambled a bit from the original topic, but I am trying to get some serious information to you so you can make an informed decision about what to do next.

If either the Ron Paul Curricumlum or a home school option is not possible for you, then definitely consider getting involved in knowing what your school teaches. Get involved in attending school board meetings and help change your local school system for the better.

Primarily for High School Students (and Parents)

So here are some final thoughts on home schooling, graduation, and career planning.

A plan of action is going to be necessary if you are going to graduate from high school and move forward in life. Again, if you go through the Ron Paul Curriculum, you will have a lot of solid preparation for life.

You need to think about what career options you have available for you if you are homeschooled and how you are going to move forward. As mentioned before, there are a lot of solid career options through community colleges. An electrician or plumber or welder is going to earn more than a customer service representative.

So really think long and hard before you dismiss community college. Plus, by going to community college you can usually fulfill undergraduate requirements for much cheaper. And again, as a reminder, if you take the Ron Paul Curriculum route you can even save even more time and money through CLEP testing, if you go that way.

Of course, you can also look into scholarships. Most scholarships require that you do something for them. If you study to be a police officer you will need to be in their service. You can be trained in the military, but right now, with a “woke” military, I’m sorry, but I can’t recommend that until it gets off of its crazy “wokeness” course. This is being written in 2021, so maybe by the time you read it, things will have changed.  And even being a police officer, with all of the defunding of police going on and the lack of support of police through “woke” policies, I really can’t recommend that right now.  But some day things may revert back to sanity.

Be assured though, it is absolutely possible to succeed and go to college as a home-schooled student.

To a certain extent, since you have to think through this, it will put you ahead of students who just blindly do what they are told and don’t really have to think much about their future. By forcing you to actively think about these questions it will put you in a better position overall.

Here is a final thought for those who think they are better suited for working with their hands. Mike Rowe, a TV personality, offers some scholarships here (at least at the time of this writing). The link to his site is here.

May God guide your choices in life as you make these decisions.

In order to round out a bit more of this discussion, I have added three other perspectives on the topic through the YouTube videos below.
